A pertinent message: the Lord allows lack in the land so the people may be prompted to seek Him.
This raises the question, is poverty sometimes of God? Is sickness sometimes of God? I think the reality is that God in His mercy allows us to experience the consequence of our actions: debt disease and famine are not what God desires at all. In fact it is interesting to read the judgements God makes against His instruments of judgement (e.g. Babylon). God wants to establish that He is kind, that He is merciful, and He is good, and not at all like those harsh forces of judgement that demonstrate the consequences of sin.
