Numbers 27-36

The Lord leads His people from Sinai to the plains of Moab...
(27v17) '...as sheep that have no shepherd...' Though Christ is our Good Shepherd, the elders of a church are the overseers, communicating the teachings of the Lord from the scriptures. A church without elders is like sheep without the shepherd. Likewise, elders must fulfil their responsibility to shepherd the people, and strive to ensure there is a replacement before they leave.
The destruction of Midian is a stark picture of the Lord's vengeance.
There is no room for compromise in the promised land - pagan inhabitants are to be driven out completely (ch.33). So, when we enter Christ, we are to 'drive out' the old self. We are not to carry with us the chains of our previous slavery, nor are we to set up a home for the flesh.
