The commandments are given in the context of freedom - "I have brought you out of slavery" (Deut 5v6). Sincere obedience to God gives us a taste of the freedom of Eden.
Idol worship is the reason for the ruthless approach to enemies (Deut 7v1-5). The people are to be full of love for God (Deut 6v5) and are not to share that love with idols. Just like marriage, there is only room for two.
